The median is the price half a region’s forecourts sell below and half above. The typical range runs from the cheapest tenth of forecourts to the dearest tenth. Regions whose medians print the same share a rank. The change is against 6 October, over only the forecourts with a price at both points, so a forecourt that opened or stopped reporting in between doesn't move it; a dash means too few of a region's forecourts had a price then to compare.
What these figures can and can’t tell you
- Nine in ten forecourts in the South East charge more for unleaded than the 166.9p median in Northern Ireland: even the price a tenth of them are at or below, 171.9p, is higher.
- Nine in ten forecourts in Scotland charge more for diesel than the 190.9p median in Northern Ireland: even the price a tenth of them are at or below, 195.9p, is higher.
- A region’s median is its typical forecourt, not every one. The only way to know what’s cheapest where you are is to compare the forecourts near you, which is what the town pages do.
- A forecourt counts in the region of the town it’s listed under on this site, and near a border that town can be on the other side of it. 257 of the 7,878 forecourts with a reliable unleaded price today (3.3%) aren't within 10 miles of any town this site lists, so each is counted in the region of its nearest town.
- Stale and implausible prices are left out, exactly as they are from the national averages; no price is altered.
- The table shows where prices differ, not why. It records what forecourts charge, not what they pay, so it can’t tell you whether a gap comes from costs, competition, the mix of supermarket and motorway forecourts in a region, or anything else.

Which part of the UK has the cheapest diesel?

Which regions are compared?
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as a whole, and England split into its nine statistical regions: the North East, North West, Yorkshire and The Humber, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, the South East and the South West. A region with fewer than 10 forecourts reporting a fuel isn't ranked for it.
How is a forecourt's region decided?
By the town it's listed under on this site, and that town's county. A forecourt more than 10 miles from every listed town counts in the region of its nearest town, unless its recorded location is too far from any town to place, in which case it's left out.
How up to date are these prices?
They are recalculated every few minutes from the Government's Fuel Finder scheme, the same data retailers themselves report into.
