Local competition, forecourt rent, and whether an area is served mainly by supermarkets or independents all affect the price at the pump. Cities with several stations competing on the same road tend to be cheaper than rural or motorway-only areas.

How is the heat map's colour scale worked out?

Each area is coloured by how far its average price sits from the UK national average for the selected fuel type — green for cheaper, red for pricier, amber near the average. The scale saturates at the 90th-percentile deviation so a handful of extreme outliers don't wash out the rest of the map.

What do the different circle sizes mean?

Larger circles represent areas with more fuel stations reporting prices — a bigger sample, and typically a more reliable average for that area.

How often does the heat map update?
