How are these monthly averages worked out?
From daily national averages, each the mean of the price readings recorded that day (one per forecourt, plus one each time a forecourt changed its price) with readings too far from that day's median to be real left out, with each day weighted once. Days with too few readings are excluded rather than averaged in, and the daily cheapest and dearest individual sites are ignored entirely, because a single misreported price moves an extreme far more than it moves an average.
How this is measured
Every figure here comes from prices this site collected from the Government’s Fuel Finder scheme. Each day’s national average is the mean of the price readings recorded that day (one per forecourt, plus one each time a forecourt changed its price), with readings too far from that day’s median to be real left out. We use daily averages rather than the cheapest and dearest individual forecourts, because retailers occasionally report an implausible price and a single bad row moves an extreme far more than it moves an average. Days with thin coverage are excluded rather than averaged in.
These are national figures and no one pays the national average. What you pay depends on the forecourts near you, which is what the town pages are for, and how far apart the cheapest and dearest of them are — covered in how much fuel prices vary between stations.
